Because it is not an organized religion as such, but rather a spiritual practice, shamanism cuts across all faiths and creeds, reaching deep levels of ancestral memory. Many formalized religions, from Buddhism to Christianity, came from ancient shamanic roots and still bear the shamanic threads of deep connection to the divine in all things.
Today people still consult with modern day shamans for practical and pragmatic solutions to problems in everyday life-from personal illness, professional challenges or family discord.
This piece, to me, is almost a form of talisman, a form of protection and guidance. Who doesn’t need that in their life? Years ago I bought an unusual oiled paper impregnated with leaves in New York, and saved it for something special. When batiked with bees wax and stains the result was translucent like the stretched animal hide of a drum.
